The Fourth Industrial Revolution and our Collective Future

Alberta is changing within the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where rapid advancements in four key areas: artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology, and digital technologies are dramatically reshaping the future of work. This transformative era is challenging traditional industries and creating new opportunities in a rapidly evolving world.

In this keynote address, Dr. Phil McRae will delve into the four defining features of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and its implications for the future of Alberta. He will explore the emerging trends that are reshaping society and the critical skills needed for the next generation to thrive in new social realities and changing economies.

From fostering creativity and critical thinking, to enhancing digital literacy and emotional intelligence, Phil will offer Fort McMurray teachers and school leaders some key considerations for their classrooms and schools. Additionally, Phil will emphasize the importance of equity in public education, ensuring that every Alberta student, regardless of background or socio-economic status, have the opportunity though schools and school communities to succeed in a rapidly changing landscape.

Like a lot of teachers in Science I had no idea what to do when The TQS was updated to include teaching about First Nations, Metis and Inuit perspectives. This session will focus on my beginning of and still continuing journey to develop the competencies listed in TQS 5. The goal of this session is to help teachers find a place to start in their journey understanding First Nations, Metis and Inuit perspectives, especially in a science classroom.

Many teachers, especially in math and science really struggle to include First Nations, Metis and Inuit knowledge into their classes. Because this is a difficult task and teachers are afraid to do something wrong, it is often simply ignored. I want to help teachers understand that we don’t have to be perfect right off the bat, we are going to make mistakes and that is ok! By talking about my journey and the things that I’ve tried and learned about that I can help other teachers find a place where they fit and are willing to try something new. Being willing to try is an important part of reconciliation and being able to create schools that are safer for all students, particularly those who are affected by the legacy of residential schools.

The cinematic renderings of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit has further popularized his works, yet readers and viewers alike are often surprised at the profound impression Tolkien’s Catholic faith has made upon his writings. C.S. Lewis, a close friend and associate whose encouragement was necessary for Tolkien to publish, wove Christian themes within his works via allegory. Why is it important to prioritize our financial well-being? Being financially prepared is essential because it's not just about money; it's a fundamental aspect of overall wellness. Neglecting financial health can lead to stress and affect mental well-being, making it harder to navigate life's challenges.

For educators, who often prioritize the needs of others over their own, focusing on personal wellness, including financial wellness, is imperative. Studies show that 40% of financially unstable Canadians experience stress related to their finances. This stress permeates their work life, with 88% reporting frequent worries and 49% admitting it affects their job performance.

But what if there were simple tools that could alleviate this stress? This session aims to provide such tools, offering practical steps that can be implemented easily.

In this session, you will learn how to identify any financial gaps that you may have, how to prepare for the unknown (financial emergencies and unexpected costs), and how to plan for your expected financial needs (home down payment, kids' post-secondary tuition, additional retirement funds). We will explore investment options, look at market dynamics, and using our core strategies we will set you up to make informed financial decisions.

Dustin Dufault is a two-spirited person from the Yukon Territory. A proud Kaska Dena First Nations individual. Growing up in small northern towns he’s had to suppress her individuality and learn to express himself in a multitude of alternative ways. Art and performing were her outlets. Learning to love the journey was the first step in their happiness. Dustin became enamoured with Drag and later developed her drag personality Ella Lamoureux. Expressing himself in an extreme feminine way taught him that femininity is not to be avoided but embraced. Through drag she’s realized that Dustin and Ella are not separate people but one person. Just shown with a different light. Growing up fabulous in the North has many tough lessons but s/he would not be the person they are today without those lessons. Through the art of drag Dustin/Ella has embraced their femininity and helped them on their journey of cultural/two-spirit identity. OPTIONAL - A lot of schools have our materials so they may wish to have on hand
a dice tray with 36 dice, 2 filled math shakers, three 1-30 dice.
It will be best if they are viewing the workshop with a colleague so they can play along as the games are presented.

Participants in this virtual session will learn a variety of math games they can immediately use in their classrooms that support the Junior High math curriculum for Alberta. Concept focuses include Operations with fractions, decimals and ratios; Mental Math; Algebra; Coordinate Geometry including defining X, defining Y, and slope; Chance and Probability. Ways to easily differentiate the games to challenge (without frustrating) their students regardless of whether they are working at, above or below grade level will be modeled throughout the session. Regular cards and dice are all that are needed to get started (have some handy for the workshop). Come prepared to play my favorite math games that help your students with operational fluency including: basic addition, subtraction, early multiplication. Increasingly sophisticated displays of artificial intelligence such as CHATGPT has elicited variegated responses ranging from experts decrying the need for regulation to educators embracing new possibilities for lesson planning and student learning. While many marvel at the alacrity by which AI churns out elaborate responses, AI is forcing people to ask themselves questions such as “what exactly divides humanity from machines?” This talk, designed for religious educators, delves into that question. One obvious answer is that machines don’t have souls. But is that really the case? And if so, why? Here we look at what exactly is a soul in light of Sacred Scripture as well as ancient and modern philosophy with the aim of better grasping what human-AI distinctions.
